Graywood Farms
Lancaster County , PA

Graywood Farms, located in Southern Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, is a 460 head Dairy facility run in partnership with Joe Graybeal, Steve Graybeal, Bryon Graybeal and Clay Hatcher. The current milking parlor is a Double 16 Parallel which was installed by Fisher and Thompson. Future expansion is planned to accommodate a 1200-head milking herd.

The new facility, designed and built by Triple H Construction from Ephrata, houses a new parlor, hospital and holding area, a 600 cow free stall barn and a building and concrete pad for our manure separator with pump.

Presently, the parlor and holding area are flushed, and the barn is scraped with a tire scraper. All the manure and flush water gravity flow to reception pit. This is then held for approximately one week. Once a week, Byron will agitate the pit for a few hours, and then begin the separation. It takes about 8 hours to empty the pit. Dry matter is then stacked on the concrete pad, while the separated water is transferred to a large lagoon, with a liner installed by Manada Construction. The water is then used to irrigate the fields at a later time and the dry matter is hauled away for field use or sold as compost.

Graywood Farms chose the Houle Separator because of the high quality construction, simplicity of design, and the ability to deliver good, consistent material day after day. Our separator will process the manure for 7-8 cows every minute, with a final moisture level of 75-80%.

We installed a Houle 4" Electric Agi Pump to stir the pit and to feed the separator. This pump uses two 10 HP motors, and has a 20" propeller and nozzle for agitation. We also installed a Val Metal Belt Conveyor which carries the solids to be stacked and further dried. The overall system requires low horsepower and is simple to operate and maintain.

All our best to the folks at Graywood Farms! We thank them for their business and wish many years of prosperity with their new facility!
